Delegating Higher Level Responsibility

If you want to grow your business without having to do everything yourself, you’re going to need other people to be able to make some decisions.

That’s just a fact.

Enter delegation.

I don’t mean the ‘create-a-checklist-then-hand-it-to-your-lowest-paid-employee-who-you-think-can-do-it’ delegation.

I mean delegating work that requires thinking. Being responsible at a little higher level.

Yes, it can happen.

It happens by delegating decision-making authority. It's not just about handing over checklists and tasks to your team; it's about empowering them to make decisions in the best interest of the business.

As you can imagine, it could be a bit more complicated to do than just handing over a follow-the-checklist task.

But it’s doable.

And more importantly: it’s important!

(At least if you want to be able to grow your business beyond yourself.)

One of the ways to successfully delegate decision-making authority is to use the Tree Model. It’s a simple tool that breaks down decisions into four levels, allowing you to determine which decisions to delegate and who to delegate them to.

The benefits go beyond just lightening your load. Delegating decisions:

  • allows you to focus on higher-level tasks,
  • empowers your team to think, learn, and grow their autonomy,
  • leads to increased job satisfaction for them and employee retention for you.

Just imagine a business where every decision didn’t have to end up back in your lap to be made...now that sounds pretty great!
